Mass of Christian Burial for Lyle Elk Nation, 66, of Eagle Butte was held Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at All Saints Catholic Church in Eagle Butte

Lyle passed away on March 30, 2022, at Avantara Health Center in Pierre.

Lyle Kenneth Elk Nation (Thapoi Nunpa - Wounded Twice) was born on December 12, 1955 to Levi Elk Nation and Mary Jane Thompson at the Cheyenne Agency.

He grew up in the Thunder Butte area and at the age of three he began living with Aunt and Uncle Edward and Alphonsine (Stricker) Takes The Gun. He attended school at the Thunder Butte Day School, Dupree Public School and the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) in Albuquerque, NM.

In 1989, Lyle returned to South Dakota and started working at the CRST Telephone Authority’s Sales and Service Department as a press binder until they stopped printing in 2010. He then worked at the Cheyenne River Gas Company as a clerk until 2015, when he made the decision to retire.

In his younger years he played fastpitch softball, slow-pitch softball and basketball. Lyle and his late brother James were known as some of the best fast-pitch softball pitchers in the area, theit team was the Thunder Butte Bullfrogs. Later on in life Lyle decided to hang up his mitt and become the coach. Lyle started his first softball team named the Falcons. He then started a traveling basketball team known as the Rebels, then another younger softball team, Sioux Nation.

Lyle was a devoted uncle to his niece Ashley and nephew Charlie. He made sure they always had what they needed for basketball and softball. He was a Grandpa to grandsons Levi and Kevin Elk Nation.

Lyle is survived by his niece Ashley Elk Nation; nephew Charlie Marshall; brother-in-law Tony Marshall; grandsons Levi and Kevin Elk Nation, Shayden and Marty Marshall, and West Claymore; granddaughters Tyus, Keya and Brileigh Marshall, Alexa Claymore, Evany and Jes

Lawrence; sisters Norma and Berna Tiokasin; cousins, sisters and brothers, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his dad Levi Elk Nation; mom Mary Jane Tiokasin; brother James Elk Nation; and sisters Carol Elk Nation, Paulette High Elk, Phyllis Hurst, Della Lovejoy, and Ruby Nordvold; grandma Maggie Pretty Buffalo-Red Bird; Aunt Clara and Uncle Paul High Elk; Uncle Narcisse “Shorty” and Aunty Mary Stricker; Uncle Ed and Aunt Alphonsine Stricker; Uncle Vetal Stricker; and cousins, nephews and nieces.
