Mustangs, Braves finish 3-4 at LNI Wrestling Invite

The McLaughlin-Timber Lake Mustangs claimed third place in the team standings of the Lakota Nation Invitational Boys Wrestling Tournament last Tuesday, Dec. 13, in Rapid City while the Cheyenne-Eagle Butte-Dupree Braves followed in fourth place overall in the 11-team field.

Lakota Tech won the team title with 150 points, followed by Pine Ridge with 110, McLaughlin-Timber Lake at 104, C-EB-Dupree with 87 and Todd County at 82 in the top five.

Ethan Ward snagged first place for McLaughlin-Timber Lake in the 106 pound class while Evan Hertel won the 126 pound title. C-EB-Dupree was led by Xadyn LaPlante, who captured the 120 pound crown.

Ward got past teammate Wanbli White Tail and into the championship bracket, where he pinned Sinquah Nelson of Pine Ridge in 0:46 before beating John Redowl of Tiospa Zina by fall at 1:05 in the title bout.

Hertel took an easier route to the 126 pound crown for the Mustangs, getting byes in the first four rounds before beating teammate Ameil Spotted Horse by fall.

LaPlante had a similar path to the 120 pound title for C-EBDupree, receiving byes in the first three rounds and then toppling McLaughlin-TL’s Chance Little Bear. He then won a 9-2 decision over Bruce Whalen of Lakota Tech for the championship.

Maynard wins girls 113 pound title

Eulayla Maynard turned in three outstanding performances to capture the 113 pound championship and lead the Cheyenne-Eagle Butte-Dupree Lady Braves to a third place finish on the girls side of the LNI.

Maynard received byes in the first two rounds. She beat Adriene Fast Horse of Todd County by fall in the third round and quickly dispatched Alicea Elk of Little Wound in the championship round. In the title match, Maynard beat Brandy Marshall of Lakota Tech by fall at 1:04 of the match.
