November 14, 1993 – October 1, 2023
Funeral services for J’Den Shaving, 29 of Eagle Butte were held Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the Eagle Butte Bingo Hall. Interment under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home was at St. Theresa Catholic Cemetery in White Horse.
J’Den passed away Sunday, October 1, 2023 at Monument Health in Rapid City.
He was born November 14, 1993 welcomed by his Ina, Darla Lawrence, Dad, Mark Shaving, and his large tiospaye.
As a little guy, he loved being a cowboy, playing outside with his cousins, being with his Uncle Benny, and spending time with his Unci Grace and Lala Paul. He attended Head Start to 5th grade at C-EB and transferred to Dupree because he found out they had elementary basketball. After 7th grade, he returned to C-EB, where he graduated with the class of 2012.
J’Den was respectful, good-natured, and mischievous with his peers and the staff. He was solid in the classroom and always behaved because he loved sports, especially basketball and softball. He had a sports-ending knee injury after high school, but some of his favorite memories were on the courts and the diamonds throughout the region.
After C-EB, he earned a construction degree from Oglala Lakota College and worked for the Tribe in the Landfill Department, and at the time of his passing, he worked for the Housing Authority.
J’Den met Camille Widow in 2015, and their relationship grew into an on-the-go love story.
J’Den loved being Lakota and often stunned people as he was a fluent Lakota speaker. His family credited Unci Grace and Lala Paul as they spoke Lakota, so J’Den learned as a child and carried it his whole life. While J’Den’s passing is unexpected, he did tell his family he wanted traditional Lakota services, which his family has done their best to give him.
J’Den is survived by his Ina, Darla Lawrence, and his dad, Mark Shaving; his brothers Jeffrie (Traci) Shaving and Parker (Charla) Ducheneaux; sisters: Markee’Rae Shaving (Naden) and Shawnee Lawrence; the love of his life, Camille Widow, and their fur babies Gunner, Rosie, Ryder, Olive, and Baby Gunner; grandparents: Mona Rae and Roger Lawrence, Jennie LeBeau, Arliss and Bob Keckler, Justin and Jenny Lawrence, Marty and Monica Lawrence, Paul and Jolene Lawrence, Richard and Lisa Lawrence, Arlyn and Cheryl Lawrence, Patricia Lawrence, Mike Shaving, Rita Shaving, and Sonya Shaving; siblings: Kella (Op), Kesse, Camryn, Shenelle, Reese, Brooklyn, Britley, Maxtyn, Kaden (Nadia), Kash (Shayna), Kase, Wiley, Kingstin, Anders, Jaxtin; Alyssa, Alexius, Megan, Taylor, Reegen, Creighton, Wesley; Trenton (Cesi Allen) Pretty Weasel, Tristan Pretty Weasel, and McClay Pretty Weasel, Ann’D Butcher; aunts and uncles; and nieces and nephews.
