Alvina Bernice Hump

March 31, 1947– June 20, 2026__________________

Alvina Bernice Hump, 79, of Spearfish passed away June 20, 2026 at Garden Hills Assisted Living in Spearfish. Mass of Christian Burial was held June 29 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Red Scaffold. Inurnment was at the church cemetery.

Alvina Bernice (Runs After) Hump (Zuya Waste Win), (Goes to War) was born on March 31, 1947 at Little Cottonwood, north of Cherry Creek to Dave and Dollie (Little Shield) Runs After.

Alvina attended the Bridger Day School, Faith Public School, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte School and the Brainerd Indian School. She attended business school in Huron.

Darrel Hump and Alvina were married on April 8, 1967. They were blessed with four children, Dave, Carmen, Carrie and Lyman.

After living a short time in Dupree and Eagle Butte, they moved back to the country to be near Darrel’s parents. They had started their own cattle program and raised bucking horse stock. Darrel and Alvina joined them in their operation and also started their own stock. They leased their horses to Gunville Rodeos and Mosbrucker Rodeos of Mandan, ND. A special highlight for them was having one of their own horses be named the bronc of the year in North Dakota.

Alvina worked at Red Scaffold Day School. She was also employed as an MCH for the Red Scaffold area, with the training she received in Tucson, AZ. After moving back to Eagle Butte, she had the opportunity to work at Diamond, a tribal daycare, as a cook. Alvina had put her education on hold since moving to the country, so when they moved back to Eagle Butte, she resumed her education at the Cheyenne River Community College. She graduated in 1997 with two degrees, Accounting and Computers. She started working for the CRST Title 1 Program in February 1991 at the Primary School, and in March of 2006 moved to the Upper Elementary where she worked until her retirement.

She is survived by her two sons, David Hump and Lyman Hump. She is preceded in death by her husband, Darrel Hump; son Ryan Hump; and two daughters, Carmen Hump and Carrie (Hump) Kennedy.
