Funeral services for Carla Veo of Timber Lake were held Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the Timber Lake Community Center. Burial, under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home, was at Emmanuel Episcopal Cemetery in White Horse.
Carla passed away Saturday, July 23, 2022, at Mobridge Regional Hospital.
Carla Jean Makes Him First was born on April 16, 1966 to Carl and Helmina (Chasing Hawk) Makes Him First in Eagle Butte. She attended Flandreau Indian School, where she graduated in 1984. She attended Haskell University and Sitting Bull College. Upon returning she was employed with Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and BIA Social Services.
She met the love of her life, Jeff Veo, in 1989. They were married in 2010.
She was employed at the Cheyenne River Community Health as a Health Representative and was employed as a Cheyenne River Housing Authority-Inspector at the time of her passing.
Carla enjoyed traveling. Her favorite trip was to Oregon for Sundance every summer. She enjoyed evenings at the casino, she liked to visit neighboring towns for the weekend, she enjoyed spending time with her mother in Little Eagle and with her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking for her family, sewing, and working with horses.
In October 2021 she was diagnosed with gall bladder cancer.
Carla is survived by her husband of 33 years, Jeff Veo, Sr.; sons Jeff Jr. of Timber Lake, Carleton (Kelly) of McLaughlin, and Leighton of Timber Lake; grandchildren Devante, Tobias, CJ, River Sage and Marcus Veo; her mother, Helmina of Little Eagle; aunt Blanche Lawrence; brother Delainy Ace Makes Him First and Hunka brother, Micheal Twofeathers.
Carla was preceded in death by her son, Edward “Eddie”; her father, Carl Makes Him First; uncle Ira Makes Him First; cousins Ira Makes Him First and Marla Makes Him First; father-in-law, Verdell Veo; and brother-in-law, Bill Veo.
