Ervin C. Knodel, 96, of Spearfish passed away on May 23, 2026 in Spearfish. He was born August 20, 1929, in Isabel, the son of Andrew and Louise Knodel.
Ervin had a very active life. He came from a family of 16, with 13 brothers and two sisters. He and 10 brothers proudly served in the military.
Ervin married Gladys Chase of Isabel on September 26, 1953, and they lived in Isabel while Erv worked as a ranch hand until 1962, when he attended Barber School at Fargo, ND. Erv did a one-year apprenticeship in Belle Fourche before moving the family to Lead, where he owned and operated Erv’s Barber Shop for over 35 years. He retired and they moved to Mobridge, where they lived for 17 years before returning to Spearfish in 2014.
Erv enjoyed many activities throughout his life including hunting, fishing, bowling, pool, golf, poker, dice and playing slot machines. He also had a love for music, playing his guitar and harmonica to entertain his family.
Ervin is survived by his wife of 72 years, Gladys; daughters Cindy Tollefson (Lew) of Watertown, Linda Sieveke (Lanny) of Belle Fourche, and Becky Loll (Joe) of Whitewood; son Ron Knodel of Whitewood; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life and burial took place June 1, 2026 in Isabel.
Cremation arrangements were under the care of Isburg Crematory of Spearfish.
