Funeral services for Gary Richard Dupris Sr., 64, of On The Tree were held February 12, 2022, at the Dupris family residence. Burial was at the Dupris Family Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.
Gary passed away Saturday, February 5, 2022, at his home.
Gary Richard Dupris, Sr. was born November 2, 1957 at the old Cheyenne Agency to Edward and Evelyn (Good Bear) Dupris. He grew up on the family ranch at On The Tree and attended school at Isabel, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte and Flandreau Indian School, where he graduated in 1978,
While at Flandreau, he met Cheryl Shooter and the two were married in 1978. They had two children, Jesse and Jamie Dupris. In 1999, Gary met Catherine Lone Fight and they were married. To this union came Gary Jr., Layne and Hayley Dupris.
From 1978 to 1980, Gary worked with Harlan and Georgie Gunville Rodeo Company. In 1989, Gary and Cheryl, along with Jesse and Jamie, moved to Bremerton, WA, where he worked for various construction companies. In 1992, Gary moved his family home to help his father, Edward, run the ranch.
His hobbies included playing darts, shooting pool and Indian Relay. From 1970, at the age of 13, Gary did Indian Relaying for his father Ed. From 1970 until 1975 (age 18), Gary was unbeaten in Indian Relay. Some of Gary’s most cherished crow baits (horses) to race were Red, Missy, Sir John, Kelly and Cactus.
Gary, Sr. is survived by his children: Jesse (Jennifer) Dupris of Oglala, Jamie (Fred Crowe) Dupris, Gary Dupris, Jr., Layne Dupris, and Hayley (Ka’bryni Hall) Dupris, all of On The Tree; grandchildren: Corleone Dupris (U.S. Army), Amora and Eduardo Bernabe, Frances Dupris, Damian, Alexis, and Peyton Salciedo and Hannah Crowe; siblings: Roger (Betty) Dupris of Timber Lake, Jolee Pfeifle of Pierre, Andy (Alma) Dupris of White Horse, Marsha LeBeau (Ron Eagle Chasing) of Eagle Butte, and Ginger Bowman of Eagle Butte.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters Jo Esther Red Willow and Edna Dupris; and grandson Emerson Dupris.
