Gloria Sitting Crow

Gloria Sitting Crow, 66, of Red Scaffold passed away February 28, 2023, at Monument Health in Rapid City. Funeral services were March 13, 2023, at the Takini School Gym. Burial followed in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery at Red Scaffold.

Gloria (Lone Eagle) Sitting Crow was born on May 27, 1956 to Romanus Bear Stops and Catherine Lone Eagle at Red Scaffold. Gloria’s siblings were: Delores Durant of Denver, CO, Kathleen Garnette (deceased), Alvina Circle Bear (deceased), Romalee Bear Stops of Rapid City, Earlene Rooks, Georgia Rooks of Wambli, James (Connie) Bear Stops of Red Scaffold, Kermit Bear Stops of Denver, CO, Melvin BadHand and Rodney BadHand, both of Wambli.

May 27, 1956 – February 28, 2023

In 1974, Gloria met Vernell Sitting Crow, and they were married on October 24, 1975. To this union three boys and four girls were born: Jennifer Chasing Hawk, Herbert Austin Sitting Crow, Troy Sitting Crow, Lena Sitting Crow, LaRee Sitting Crow, Cheron Sitting Crow and Justin Sitting Crow.

Gloria raised Isidro and William and was a foster parent to Dawson White Mag Pie.

Gloria received her General Education Degree at a private school in Hawarden, Iowa. She then went on to get her bachelor’s degree in education at the Cheyenne River Lakota College in Eagle Butte and continued her learning at BHSU in Spearfish and Si Tanka College in Eagle Butte.

Gloria was a CNA at Fargo, ND. She became a teacher at Red Scaffold School and a Head Start teacher. She continued to serve children as Disability Manager and Nutrition Services at the Head Start Center. Still serving children, Gloria was a paraprofessional at Takini School and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte Schools. Gloria knew that she wanted to advocate for student success and served as a Takini School Board member for many years.

Gloria was a Lakota language preservationist by speaking and teaching others the language. She was a champion traditional dancer. She was the essence of her Lakota name, Wa’chante Wa’wokiye Win (Helps with Kindness).

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg was in charge of arrangements.
