Hilda D. Marshall, 74, of Eagle Butte, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2022 at her home in Eagle Butte.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 15, 2022, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Eagle Butte. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in LaPlant.

Hilda was born March 30, 1948 to Guy and Mary Straight Head Bagola. She was raised in Thunder Butte until she was old enough to go to school. She was later sent to St. Mary’s boarding school for girls in Springfield for a year. She returned to Thunder Butte and finished out her school years at the Old Cheyenne Agency School where she graduated in 1966.

She enrolled in a cosmetology school in Dallas, TX and graduated at the top of her class. Upon graduation she began her dream of fixing and cutting hair but soon realized after a few years that it wasn’t her forte. Hilda then became a nurse’s aide, which she loved, because she was a very compassionate and loving person.

She met and married Dannis “Danny” Burgee and to this union two daughters were born, Carmen and Tammy. By the 1970’s Hilda

took her family and moved to San Jose, CA to be near her sister Eva and her family. She worked for a Native American program for several years. In 1980 Hilda and her family moved home. Later, in 1990, she ended her marriage.

One of her dreams was to own her own home and in 1994 Habitat for Humanity gave her that dream.

She was a kind and loving person and raised four of her grandchildren. She also took in a lot of other children.

Hilda went back to college and earned her degree in education and went on to get her master’s degree. After college she met and married Lloyd “Hap” Marshall and they made their home in Thunder Butte and later in Eagle Butte. Hilda loved pow-wows, cookouts, spending time with friends and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved her dearly.

Hilda is survived by her husband Lloyd “Hap” Marshall; daughters: Carmen (Rocky High Elk) Burgee and Tammy Burgee; stepson Will Marshall; sisters Eva Jost of Citrus Heights, CA and Laura Bagola of Eagle Butte; 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Nathan Bagola and Melvin Bagola; sisters Arbana Bagola, Delema Bagola, Esterlene Bagola Low Dog, and Gyla Bagola Jandreau; grandson Beau Kaden James; and numerous relatives and friends.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg was in charge of arrangements.
