Marcus Lesmeister

Mass of Christian Burial for Marcus Lesmeister, 87, of Mobridge was held December 7, 2021, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mobridge. Burial was at the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. He passed away December 3, 2021, at his home.

Marcus Lesmeister was born to Bregetta (Burckhard) and Frank Lesmeister in their farm home near Eagle Butte on April 14, 1934. Sharing his life were three brothers and two sisters. He spoke only German when he went to first grade in a country school. There he learned English and then began attending Eagle Butte School. He graduated from high school in 1952.

While in high school he took a few saxophone lessons. He put his musical talent to use in a Gettysburg dance band for a few years before going to the US Army in 1957 and serving in Germany.

Farming/ranching was his lifelong career. They operated a dairy farm in Minnesota from 1959 to 1965. The rest of their lives they farmed and ranched in Corson County. Marcus was an early irrigator and always implemented the latest technologies. He attended the veterans farm schooling program.

Marcus was an originator of the Mission Township, where he served as a supervisor for many years.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s parish family and the Knights of Columbus. He was a eucharistic minister, sacristan, rosary leader and parish greeter. He enjoyed explaining and sharing his faith with newcomers.

Marcus and Audrey taught adult dance classes through the community education program. They enjoyed dancing and socializing with their friends. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, painting, playing music on multiple instruments at one time. Sharing those talents with his family and traveling brought him much joy. They traveled extensively, even to visit their exchange student in Paris and to nine European countries. Marcus is survived by his wife, Audrey, of Mobridge;

Marcus is survived by his wife, Audrey, of Mobridge; son Jeff of St. Paul, MN; nine grandchildren; brother, Lawrence (Charlotte) Lesmeister of Deadwood; and 21 nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, son Keith, brothers Adam and Louie, and sisters Helen and Tracy.
