Marie Ternes

Marie Ternes, 93, of McIntosh passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at the Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at St. Bonaventure’s Catholic Church in McIntosh. Fr. Adam Hofer officiated with burial in St. Bonaventure’s Catholic Cemetery in McIntosh.

Marie Volk was born on December 19, 1929, in Shields, ND, to Arseius and Fanny (Koch) Volk. She was raised on the family farm and attended country school west of Shields through the 8th grade. Marie was determined to obtain her GED and achieved her goal in 1968.

On October 21, 1948, Marie, was united in marriage to Seferious “Ex” Ternes. They lived in the Shields area until August of 1949, when

they moved 9 miles north of McIntosh, where they purchased the Glen Nelson farm.

Six children were born to this union: Anthony, Phillip, Judy, George, Kathleen and Steve. They raised their children and farmed and ranched for over 70 years together. Marie enjoyed cooking, baking, making kuchen, embroidery and gardening. She served on the Sioux County Social Services Board for over 25 years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and St. Bonaventure Altar Society.

Marie is survived by two sons, Phillip (Sherry) Ternes and George (Lorrie) Ternes McIntosh; two daughters, Judy Edinger of McIntosh and Kathleen Gehring of Jamestown, ND; eight grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; one sister, Dorothy; two sisters-in-law, Alvina Lenerville of Rapid City and Darlene Soucy of Fargo, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Seferious; two sons, Anthony and Steve; her siblings, Christina, Johnny, Mike, Jochim, Helen and Bert; and sons-in-law, Duane Gehring and Robert Edinger.
