William (Bill) Donovan

William “Bill” Donovan, 80, of Rapid City died Thursday, August 20, 2020 in Rapid City.

William David Donovan was born September 2, 1939 on the family farm near Hecla to Edward and Freda Elizabeth (Himes) Donovan.

He attended a one room country school, Johnson School. He attended Hecla High School for 4 years and graduated as valedictorian in 1957. He then attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen. He had his first teaching job in Hettinger, ND, where he taught English and Literature. He then taught in Eagle Butte and was the librarian until he retired.

Around 1980, Bill spent one summer working with his brother Jerry with Habitat for Humanity building homes in Rapid City.

Bill collected antiques, loved to read, and enjoyed movies, cooking and hosting dinners.

Bill is survived by his elder brothers Jerry Donovan of San Marcos, CA and Joe Donovan of Hecla, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Shirley and Betty, and one brother Bob.

His Celebration of Life Service will be at 10 a.m. MT on Friday, August 28, 2020 at the Old Story Book Island Shelter, 2911 Canyon Lake Drive in Rapid City.

Burial will be at a later date at the Hecla City Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home of Rapid City.
