Would-be Isabel water users frustrated with lack of progress

Delays in proposed water/sewer projects had potential customers who hope to be placed on municipal utilities wondering what the hold -up was about at Monday’s Isabel town board meeting. John Meginness, who is constructing a new building at his grain bin site, was at the meeting. So were Steve Schweitzer and Robin Miller, residents of the former Frank Fuhrer place. They, along with one other party, are awaiting progress from the town since the board was openly receptive to the projects months ago. Now, they are wondering if there is time to get things done before a freeze this fall.

Wheat harvest near completion during hot temps, lack of rain

Terry and Kevin Johnson of Firesteel were trying to finish wheat harvest Monday, the same as many other farmers in the region. Winter wheat harvest is nearly complete in the state, with many producers reporting better results than last year.

This week’s USDA crop progress report for South Dakota lists spring wheat as 80 percent harvested and winter wheat 97 percent harvested, both well ahead of last year and the average. Regarding yields, the South Dakota Wheat Commission reported this week that farmers are reporting anywhere from 50 to 60 bushels per acre up to 70-80 in certain areas, including around Eagle Butte.

Petition to call for change of governance

Timber Lake is one step closer to changing the form of city government.

City Finance Officer Karla Nordyke told the city council at their meeting Monday night that Margaret Holloman plans to initiate the petition process to change from the mayor and alder form to a board of trustees. The number of trustees was not specified but must be three, four, or five.

The petition requires signatures of at least 15% of the number of registered voters who cast ballots in the last general election —about 45-50. An election must be held within 50 days after the petition is submitted to the council. Nordyke suggested the election might be held the same day as the general election (November 6).

2018 Isabel rodeo honoree: Steve Locken

The Isabel Rodeo Association is pleased to name Steve Locken as the 2018 Honoree and to recognize Steve’s years of service and support of the Isabel Rodeo and community. Steve passed away recently after a twoyear battle with cancer. A life-long Isabel resident, Steve, with his wife, Pam (Alley), raised their family north of Isabel on the family ranch. Steve was a fourth generation operator.

Steve exemplified the volunteer spirit that helped build and put on the Isabel Rodeo year after year. Pouring cement for the cook shack, welding on the catwalk and helping with the new grandstand are just three of the projects Steve worked on over the years at the rodeo grounds. For many years, he pushed cattle into the roping chutes and helped Pam in the cook shack, when the fire department ran it as a fund raiser.
