Mayor explains resignation

Timber Lake Mayor Clyde Pfeifle told the Topic this week that his decision to step down from the post was not due to any particular thing but rather a lot of different things. Pfeifle had not filed a petition for the office and announced as he left the May 7 city council meeting that he would not accept an appointment. He left a brief handwritten note to that effect and the council accepted his resignation.

Petition to vacate alley for Family Dollar ruled invalid

By Kathy Nelson

The Timber Lake City Council meeting Monday night began with the resignation of Mayor Clyde Pfeifle.

Pfeifle arrived a few minutes after the 6:30 start time (which had been changed from 7 p.m. due to a heavy agenda) and stayed only long enough to get the agenda and the minutes of the previous meeting approved.

As the annual reorganization began, Pfeifle abruptly announced, “I’m retiring” and exited the room. The announcement was a surprise to council members and a small audience gathered for the public hearing on Dale LaCompte’s petition to vacate the alley platted in Block 5, the proposed site of a Family Dollar Store.

Weather affects spring planting, feed supplies

By Bob Johnson

Raising cattle and crops in western South Dakota is not for the faint of heart, and the weather over the past year has tested the mettle of local farmers and ranchers. Last year’s dry growing season followed by extended cold weather this spring has delayed the planting of crops while increasing the demand for cattle feed. While the grass in the pastures remained dormant for an extra two to four weeks this year, ranchers have had to keep feeding their cattle from their already meager supply of hay.
