Local pros lighting up leaderboards at PRCA events

In case folks were forgetting just how talented the pro rodeo competitors from West River country are, a few of them issued a reminder during a two-week run that included a busy July 4th weekend on the PRCA schedule.

Maher caps Jr. High career with fifth place at national finals

McLaughlin 14-year-old Pete Maher capped his third and final trip to the National Jr. High Finals Rodeo in Des Moines, IA, last week with a fifth place overall finish in goat tying. The in-coming freshman - already a formidable rodeo veteran - will move to the high school ranks next season.
Bullfighter Dayton Spiel of Parade was injured during the Sitting Bull Stampede last year after being struck in the eye with a bull bell. The Stampede committee will provide each bull rider this year with a Licabell - a pliable reubber alternative to the traditional metal bell. Licabell is donating a portion of the proceeds from the purchase to Spiel.

Dayton Spiel got his start in rodeo as a bull rider but quickly found his niche as a ProRodeo bullfighter.The Parade native’s efforts earned him a spot at the RAM Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo twice before an unfortunate accident halted his budding career.

Chazz Gabe, a 2022 Timber Lake High School grad and one of the premier young bull riders in the South Dakota Rodeo Association today, celebrated getting his PRCA card last week by winning the bull riding event at the Irene Rodeo June 28-29.

Locals Woodward, Deal among Pioneer Days Rodeo winners

Local competitors Minda Woodward of Dupree and Kaden Deal of Eagle Butte were among those capturing top honors in their respective events at the 2024 Dupree Pioneer Days Rodeo held Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23.
