Ryan Maher, owner of The Occidental General Store at Isabel, has received word that his application for an off-sale liquor license from the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe has been approved. The CRST Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission approved the license at its June 30 meeting.

The South Dakota Board of Water and Natural Resources, meeting on June 23, approved $243,789,728 in grants and loans for drinking water, wastewater, and solid waste projects in South Dakota. Timber Lake, Isabel, Dupree, Mobridge and WEB Water Assn. all received funds for projects.
An 1876 Winchester rifle (LEFT) that belonged to Sitting Bull (ABOVE) was auctioned off in early June, selling for $132,000. The firearm was part of an extensive collection belonging to former banker Larry Ness of Yankton. It supposedly confiscated from Sitting Bull’s cabin on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation on Dec. 15, 1890, after the Sioux leader was shot by a tribal police officer during a botched arrest attempt.

LaPlant child drowns at Farm Island

A three-year-old girl from LaPlant drowned at Farm Island State Park near Pierre on Saturday, June 25. According to the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office, a 9-1-1 call at 5:20 p.m. CT reported a missing child last seen near the water’s edge at Farm Island.
