Dewey, Ziebach County voters favor legalization of marijuana

Ballot Measure 27 - an initiative that would have legalized the use and possession of recreational marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia for South Dakotans over the age of 21 lost narrowly in the Nov. 8 election, with 53 percent of voters (183,864) opposed and 47 percent (163,570) in favor.

Isabel liquor license application hits a snag with town board

The Isabel Board of Trustees approved two liquor license applications for renewal in 2023 but withheld action on two other licenses belonging to one business because it is currently in arrears in its accounts with the town. On-sale and off-sale liquor license fees in Isabel are $150 per month each.

Fitzgerald elected to Fourth Circuit

John H. Fitzgerald of Saint Onge was the winner of a five-way contest for a position as Circuit Judge in the Fourth Judicial Circuit, which includes the counties of Butte, Corson, Dewey, Harding, Lawrence, Meade, Perkins, and Ziebach. Fitzgerald tallied 8125 votes (36%) in the non-partisan race.

November 3, 2022 Richard Todd Steele, 42, McLaughlin, has been acquitted of three federal charges. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in September of 2021 for assault with a dangerous weapon, assault resulting in serious bodily injury, and threatening a federal law enforcement officer.

Bieber wins seat on county board

In the Nov. 8 general election, Ben Bieber of Trail City defeated incumbent Steve Keller of Trail City for the District 5 seat on the Corson County Commission. Bieber, a Republican, received 73 votes, and Keller, an Independent, received 65.
